Middle schoolers, what do YOU want to be when you grow up? You’re probably not sure yet. Don’t worry; you’ve got plenty of time to decide and even change your mind a jillion times! And maybe, like me, you’ll get to live more than one dream! My high school friends all knew I was destined to become a magazine editor – and in fact, I followed my heart to journalism school at Syracuse University and loved my career writing and editing feature stories. But after 20 years, I followed my heart again – and went back to school to become a teacher. Why? Because as a Language Arts teacher, I could combine my love of writing (and reading) and make a difference at the same time – because YOU matter! J  This is my ninth year teaching Language Arts at TMS. When I’m not teaching, I am with my husband and kids (three teenagers) -- well, one is away at college, but we text a lot! I live in Tenafly, so expect an occasional “Mrs. Florczak sighting” – which might feel a little weird at first, but I think it’s nice to run into one another! Scroll down for some Mrs. Florczak trivia (and be sure to click on my Language Arts Classroom Page on this site for a welcome message):

My favorite book: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Other favorites: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, The Cuckoo Clock by Mrs. Molesworth -- which transported me to another world. Originally published in 1877, I have an "antique," crumbling copy (ask me to bring it in!), but you can now read it online at
http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/molesworth/clock/clock.html

Favorite poems: "Abandoned Farmhouse" by Ted Kooser, "Birches" by Robert Frost, "Vacation" by Rita Dove

What I'm reading now: A book of Haiku. You will see why when school starts! This summer I read Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper and Scrawl by Mark Shulman (it is VERY likely that both will appear in our classroom!); I also read Lab Girl by Hope Jahren; I really enjoy memoirs -- and I learned a lot about trees from this one!

Word I spelled wrong in my fourth grade spelling bee: committee

What I most like to write: poetry

Favorite TV show: anything on HGTV! The Office and Modern Family, too.

Favorite color: purple

Hardest subjects: math in seventh grade and Russian in college

Favorite subject(s): math in high school and English every year (of course!)

Longtime ambition: to write a novel -- maybe a young adult book!
